A general Wendigo

One of several possible Wendigo transformations depicted in The Monster Attacks 2

A Wendigo is featured in The Monster Attacks 2. In Native American mythology, it's a spirit that possesses humans and turns them into cannibals. In the novel, the Wendigo is a result of college student Petra Williams being bitten by a dog infected with the Rage Virus. The Wendigo is said by some to be the scariest animal in the series.

Biography

The Wendigo is at first an unknown girl that has been infected by the Wendigo virus. However, Nathan Lynn discovers the creature used to be a college student named Petra Williams from Charleston, West Virginia. To his horror, Nathan finds diary entries from April 1, 2012 containing extremely graphic events pertaining to how she became a Wendigo, ranging from eating dead people from previous animal attacks, discussing ways to kill and eat her fellow campers and finally obtaining a Whitetail Deer skull, complete with antlers (the real human face was hidden behind the makeshift "battle helmet"). Petra, now a Wendigo, starts chasing her friends through the woods and pursues Abby Burr's sister Cassie into a cave. From there, it begins to kill off various people one by one.

It later becomes disinfected, reverting Petra back to human form. Unfortunately, the rabid dog that bit her (this wasn't shown) bites another victim, spawning a new one in the forest. This one, because of the force of the dog's bite, is almost impossible to revert to human form, so Nathan and his gang have no choice but to destroy it. This new Wendigo makes a new killing spree all by itself. Nathan is the first to run into this new Wendigo, which attacks him with a tomahawk. He takes Petra into the cabin Cassie hid, but finds Cassie gone; she has hidden inside the attic. They work together with Dimitri Mayakov and his assault team when they are assaulted by the Wendigo by hiding in the attic and then escaping to the roof, where they make a break for the nearest river. The Wendigo pursues them there, but after a fierce battle, the Wendigo finally disappears below the river...only to come back and attack again a few minutes later. Dimitri grabs Petra's axe and, deciding that there's no other option but to destroy the Wendigo's human shell as well as the virus itself, hacks the Wendigo to pieces.

In addition, a second Wendigo appears in northern Canada. The Russian President, Petya Puskov, ends up trapped in the forests of northern Canada after Taliban terrorists attempt to hijack his plane, causing it to crash into northern Canada. The FSO manages to kill off the Taliban hiding in the woods, but they soon realize they are being hunted; fellow Monster Investigations Incorporated agent Korey Hogan is sent in with a team of US Marines in order to find out what happened, but are hunted by a Wendigo. Korey finds the agents, but the members of his assault team are murdered one by one by the creature. In the midst of the slaughter, Korey finds the Russian President, as well as a group of British, American, and German tourists. He also learns the history behind the Wendigo assaults and works with the agents to stop the killings from escalating again, resulting in a cat-and-mouse chase through the Northern Canadian woods, which eventually leads to Korey destroying the creature, but not before it kills him first.

From there, it's never seen again...until the epilogue.

Also, the Wendigo is scheduled to appear in The Monster Attacks 3, but this is unconfirmed. In the epilogue of the second novel, Nathan finds leaked footage of a Wendigo attack aboard an airplane, which may lead to the events of the next sequel, but it's later confirmed to be a fan-made horror movie.

Things come to light at the very end of the novel, where Nathan finds a video camera hidden in the forest during a vacation in the Canadian Rockies, which shows a series of hikers that have disappeared due to unexplained circumstances and one of them is a Wendigo. Nathan turns to Dimitri Mayakov and remarks that "we have a new Wendigo on our hands."

Trivia

  • Originally, the Wendigo was supposed to be a guy throughout the entire novel.
  • Cassie was also supposed to be killed by the Wendigo, but this was changed.
  • Cassie is the soul survivor of the whole incident, other than Jared, Nathan, Nikki, a handful of the campers, and Dimitri.
  • The Wendigo was orginially going to be just a crazed human instead of a creature with a deer skull for a head.
  • The attacks on Nathan Lynn, Nikki Harding and the murdering of the entire SWAT team and half of the entire GRU are the only attacks that happen in broad daylight. The other assaults occur at night.
  • The Wendigo was originally supposed to kill Dimitri Mayakov, but this was changed.
  • The new Wendigo, unlike the first, looks different. The new one is a guy, but wears a potato sack mask and wields a chainsaw.
  • There are two Wendigo types: one is the partial animal type as depicted in The Monster Attacks 2 and the other is the whole (full) animal type, in which ALL of the human being is turned into an animal.
  • The Wendigo that is in the epilogue and in Northern Canada is the full animal type.
  • All Wendigos, even full animal ones, have second hearts.
  • The second heart's durability varies from type; the second heart in the partial-animal is weak, as destroying it will destroy the entire virus infecting the human. The full animal's second heart is much harder; it takes from six to seven hits to destroy it.
